Mad About Millennials?

5 Ways to Attract Millennials to Your Business

April 12, 2017

A steadily increasing buzz has been heard about the difficulty of recruiting the millennial generation. Common claims floating around criticize the youngsters, born from 1982-2000, as lazy, entitled, socially inept, addicted to technology, self-centered, and oversensitive. These harsh assertions have painted the millennials as near impossible to employ. How do we overlook these stereotypes and begin to see the Millennials in a new way? First, let's take a closer look at the selfie-obsessed generation.

Millennials make up about one-third of the total U.S. population and are characterized by their vast diversity. Majority of this group are at the start of their careers and will be pivotal contributors to the economy. Millennials were directly affected by the 2007-2009 recession and struggled to find stability in the labor market. It is likely the they will suffer the effects of the recession for years to come. While Millennials are a highly educated group, nearly 64% attending college, they are crippled by debt averaging at $52,000 before they even start their careers. They were promised good, secure jobs after college, but were met with a competitive market where 50% cannot find a job in the first six months post-college. They are the first generation who have a 50/50 chance on whether they will make more money than their parents. How do you reach out to this down-trodden group? It's simple. Focus on creating an environment that they will thrive in.

1)   Teamwork

Having a work environment that fosters teamwork is essential to attracting Millennials. The idea of division and competition is not favorable to a generation that wants nothing more than unity and collaboration. Contrary to the socially inept stereotype, Millennials actually highly depend on support and reassurance from their peers. They strongly believe that working together to tackle a problem, will be more beneficial than facing it alone.

2)   Transparency

To Millennials, honesty and authenticity goes a long way in the workplace. Being as Transparent as possible will not only get Millennials to be attracted to your business, but they will also want to stay. This group is not afraid to ask questions. If they feel they are being manipulated by their managers, underestimated by senior workers, or unfulfilled with their daily tasks, they'll simply leave in search of another job.

3)   Technology

Technology was an integral part in Millennials path to adulthood. Thus, they realize the importance of having cutting-edge technologies to make things more efficient and productive. Businesses working on old systems, which could be improved, will discourage this group. Just because old ways have served a business well, it will frustrate a Millennial who knows that new technologies could create more efficient solutions.

4)   Impact

Millennials crave making some kind of noticeable impact on the world. Whether it be through the business they work in, or a solo act, they want to see and feel like they are making a difference. Setting goals for Millennials to achieve is key from the beginning to have them see the path that will be ahead of them. They also want to see an overall career path trajectory in order to see the growth they will have in order to spur change/make a difference with where they are at.

5)   Feedback

In order for Millennials to feel like they are being engaged, they require lots of feedback. Similar to the way someone may like or comment on a social media post, Millennials want to know how they are preforming in the workplace. They also like to share their ideas to those around them, and to talk about potentiality.
